With over three decades of dining experience, Little Italy is India’s one of the leading Italian cuisine restaurant chain that has carved a niche for itself by serving vegetarian Italian dishes to its customers, as opposed to commonly used meat dishes at the time, adapting and transforming the authentic Italian recipes to Indian palettes using gourmet ingredients.
‘‘We began with authentic Italian food and a completely vegetarian philosophy, at a time when both were quite unconventional,’’ says Raj Mehta, Chairman, Little Italy.
Based in Pune, the brand began its journey in 1989 when Italian cuisine was still relatively unfamiliar in India. The brand then made its Mumbai debut in 1995. In 2007, Little Italy entered into the franchising model, taking the brand to the global stage. In 2018, the brand diversified into the modern Indian casual dining experience with AKSS. In 2020, the introduced ‘ACASA by Little Italy’ bringing the finest Italian dishes to its customers. Most recently, the brand has launched ‘Little Italy Escape’, bringing more than just dining experience to the customers.
The brand is also working on a flagship model ‘Little Italy Reserve’, bringing a younger and more contemporary expression of Little Italy to its customers.
Talking about the brand evolution, Amrut Mehta, MD, Little Italy, says, ‘‘We are still a family-run business and very attached to what we do. For us, Little Italy has never just been outlets and numbers. It is about our people, our franchise partners and the customers who have grown up with us.’’
Over the last three decades, the brand has shaped the culture and understanding of Italian food in India, introducing generations of diners to different pastas, pizzas, cheeses, sauces and regional Italian preparations.
“We haven't just watched Italian food grow in India. We've grown with the Indian Italian-food consumer,” adds Raj.
Little Italy has over 50 outlets in 24 cities, and has expanded globally in countries like the UAE, Nepal, and Thailand. The Italian restaurant chain aims to scale its footprint in the new market, as well as penetrate deeper in the existing market.
Talking about the brand’s expansion strategy, Amrut said, ‘‘We have built a strong presence across metros as well as tier II markets. Udaipur, Nashik, Shirdi, Nagpur and Bhopal have performed very well for us and reinforced our belief in the opportunity beyond the largest cities.’’
He further emphasized that Tier II and selected Tier III cities form a major part of their next expansion phase. At the same time, he sees significant ‘white spaces’ in North and East India, with a new outlet coming up in Guwahati.
Raj adds that Little Italy has grown organically with franchise partners, teams and stakeholders rather than chasing an outlet number solely.
Little Italy is available across every touchpoint, be it physical, or digital channels. Discussing the brand’s omni-channel touch points, Amrut says, ‘‘Although restaurants remain our central focus, we are also building our own app for direct ordering, personalised CRM and Grains Rewards programme, alongside delivery, social media, and experiences for brand’s growth.’’ He adds, ‘‘More importantly, we are building a genuine community with our customers who have been eating with us for decades. We don't want that relationship to exist only when they walk through our restaurant doors.’’
He emphasized that the brand’s app and rewards ecosystem allow them to recognise their customers, reward loyalty, communicate directly and create experiences specifically for its community.
Franchising has played a very important role in the brand’s growth journey. The brand has used this model extensively in its expansion phase and still looks up to it as an entry point for new emerging markets.
Talking about the franchising model, Amut says, ‘‘Currently we are looking to enter new markets via franchising as an entry point. This model is incredibly helpful in the emerging markets as the local collaborations are ‘the eyes and ears’ for onground developments. This is a key part of our strategy and our growth journey.’’
‘‘Many of our partners have been associated with the brand for years, and we see them as an extension of the Little Italy family, adds Raj. “We don't look at selling a franchise, but seek people who want to build Little Italy with us in their market.”
Talking about the global scaling of the brand, Amrut says, ‘‘While India remains our biggest opportunity, particularly Tier II and III cities and regions where we are underrepresented, we also have international aspirations. We are exploring opportunities in the UK, US and African markets, with large Indian communities where our vegetarian Italian positioning has a natural relevance. The ambition is big, but the brand’s growth will remain our thoughtful motivational aspect through partner-led business model.’’
The India foodservice market size is expected to grow from USD 93.97 billion in 2026 to USD 153.37 billion in 2031 at a CAGR of 10.3% over 2026-2031, as per Modor Intelligence report. The rise of digital payments, urban migration, working class population, and the steering demand toward prepared meals and technology-enabled ordering has increased the growth of this sector. Further, growing domestic tourism, improved highway infrastructure, and airport upgrades has further broadened India’s foodservice market beyond the metropolitan cities, catalyzed by increasing franchise investments and demographic base.
Focusing on the Italian cuisine in the food service segment, Raj says, ‘‘India's relationship with international food (cuisine) has changed completely. Italian cuisine has gone from something unfamiliar to something people eat regularly and understand.’’
Amrut adds, ‘‘Italian has become one of the most preferred cuisines in India….Little Italy has been fortunate to participate in and help shape this category in India. He adds, the larger opportunity for us as a brand is not just making people occasionally choose Italian cuisine but making it part of how India eats.’’
Little Italy has extended beyond dining experience to Little Italy Escape, bringing beautiful hotels, resorts, vineyards and experience-led destinations to its existing ecosystem.
‘‘Little Italy Escapes is our attempt to bring food, travel, and hospitality experiences together,’’ says Amrut. ‘‘With our hospitality partners, we can create wine experiences, pasta workshops, curated meals, local activities, stays and weekend itineraries around our restaurant, creating escapes from city life for our customers.’’
Raj adds, ‘‘People remember holidays through food. Little Italy Escapes give us an opportunity to become part of those memories.’’
Amrut finally outlines the brand’s future plans. He says, ‘‘We're looking at the future through different growth engines- Firstly Little Italy new outlets for deeper Tier II and III expansion, and stronger penetration across the North and East Indian markets, and eventually international growth across the UK, US and Africa. Secondly, Little Italy Escapes, building destination restaurants through accommodation partnerships and experience-led properties. Thirdly, Little Italy Reserve, our new-generation flagship expression of the brand.’’
Talking about its newest format- Little Italy Reserve, Amrut shares that this new format will bring multiple dining experiences together under one destination. The reserve will have an all-day café, an evolved Mediterranean-Italian dining restaurant and a cocktail bar, bringing different moods and occasions at different times of day, but connected through one larger hospitality experience.
Further discussing the new formats, Amrut, says, ‘‘The first generation built trust. The second generation isn't interested in changing Little Italy simply for the sake of change. We want to take everything that made the brand special and build on it for the future.’’
Raj concludes by saying, ‘‘We have always been a family business that genuinely loves restaurants and hospitality. Seeing our people, customers and a full-service restaurant after all these years still gives us tremendous joy. Our ambition grater than just opening more restaurants. We want to contribute in making Italian cuisine India's most loved and regularly consumed cuisines. Further disclosing his vision about the brand, he adds, ‘‘Whether someone is dining at Little Italy, spending a weekend at a Little Italy Escape, or experiencing the new Little Italy Reserve, or cooking pasta at home with Acasa, we aim to grow organically, move forward passionately and bring together our people, customers, franchise partners and stakeholders in this growth journey.’’
