The big-screen experience continues to be one of the most preferred out-of-home entertainment formats, bringing together scale, immersive sound, emotion, and shared experiences in a way that cannot be replicated at home. PVR INOX has transformed this collective cinematic experience into a compelling business model, positioning itself as a significant player in the organised entertainment industry.
PVR began its journey in 1955 as a joint venture between Priya Exhibitors Private Limited and Australia's Village Roadshow. In 1997, PVR opened its first multiplex in Saket, New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in India's multiplex industry. Meanwhile INOX leisure was incorporated in 1999 and commenced cinema operations with multiplexes in Pune and Vadodara. In 2023, these two mega companies merged to form PVR INOX, India’s largest and premium out-of-home entertainment brand, creating a defining moment in the Indian entertainment industry
Commenting on its journey, Gautam Dutta, CEO – Revenue & Operations, PVR INOX Limited, says, ‘‘At PVR INOX, our journey has been guided by a constant effort to redefine ‘out-of-home’ entertainment for Indian consumers. We have moved beyond the traditional idea of film exhibition to create complete, world-class entertainment destinations.’’
Over the years, the brand has strengthened its experience through premium formats, advanced technology, thoughtful design, curated food and beverage offerings, and a more elevated approach to hospitality.
Gautam says, ‘‘Our leadership comes from our focus on innovation, customer-centric design and a deep belief in the emotional power of watching a film together on the big screen.’’
Innovation remains central to the brand’s strategy. PVR INOX has expanded its portfolio of premium formats, including IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX and ICE, along with luxury concepts such as Director’s Cut and LUXE. Each format offers a distinct cinema experience to the customers, through scale, sound, movement, visual immersion and better comfort.
PVR INOX programming has expanded beyond mainstream films to include regional cinema, international festival titles, independent films, anime, concert films, sports and live events. This has made cinema more accessible and relevant to a wider audience, including Gen Z audiences who are looking for varied, social and experience-led forms of entertainment.
Gautam says, ‘‘We are evolving our cinemas into versatile cultural and entertainment platforms. Alongside mainstream films, we bring audiences acclaimed titles from international festivals, such as Cannes, Toronto and Berlin through partnerships with studios including A24, Warner Bros. and Lionsgate, and regional cinemas across different languages to help audience discover stories beyond their traditional markets.’’ He adds, ‘‘This is particularly relevant for younger audiences and Gen Z, who are open to exploring ‘content-based storytelling’ rather than focusing only on its language or origin.’’
The alternate content offering includes live sports screenings, concert films, esports tournaments and live theatre. Together, these initiatives create more compelling reasons for diverse audiences to visit our cinemas.
PVR INOX currently operates 1,792 screens across 357 properties in 114 cities in India and Sri Lanka. While the brand continues to strengthen its presence in major metropolitan markets, the brand aims to grow in Tier II, Tier III and emerging cities to drive its future growth.
‘‘Our future growth will be driven by Tier II, Tier III and emerging cities through the PVR INOX SMART Cinemas format. These markets have a young and aspirational consumer base, and a growing appetite for premium lifestyle experiences and high-quality entertainment,’’ says Gautam.
He further shares ‘‘Through ‘Smart Cinemas’ concept and carefully planned screen deployments, we aim to bring modern cinema infrastructure, advanced technology and curated content to these emerging markets.’’
These markets offer the opportunity to build an early presence, develop long-term brand relationships and establish cinemas as vibrant community destinations.
Franchise and asset-light partnership models play an important role in expanding India’s cinema infrastructure. It combines operational expertise, content relationships and brand strength with the local market understanding of real estate partners.
This collaborative approach helps manage capital requirements, and support sustainable expansion into underserved markets and locations. It also enables partners to leverage a proven operating model and benefit from consistent standards of technology, service and programming.
‘‘There is significant potential for such partnerships in emerging cities, mixed-use developments and locations where consumers are looking for high-quality entertainment options, says Gautam. ‘‘With the right alignment between the brand, the partner and the market, these models help bring advanced technology, regional and international content, and alternate programming to new audiences,’’ says Gautam.
PVR INOX’s Franchise-Owned, Company-Operated, (FOCO) model is an important aspect of its capital-efficient expansion strategy. It enables the brand to grow its network at scale while retaining strong control over operations, service standards and the overall customer experience.
Discussing the FOCO model, Gautam shares, ‘‘Under this model, PVR INOX brings its operational capabilities, technology infrastructure, content relationships and guest management expertise to the customers while our partners contribute to strategic capital and local real estate expertise, allowing us to enter high-potential markets with greater efficiency and local understanding.’’
It helps bring the big-screen experience to audiences in emerging markets who may not have access to organised, premium cinema earlier, bringing the same standards of projection, sound, hospitality, food and programming of PVR INOX brand that is present in the metros.
The FOCO model creates a strong balance between local partnerships and centralised operational excellence, allowing the brand to expand in a measured and sustainable manner.
Today’s audiences are looking for an experience that combines convenience, comfort, quality and personalisation. The big screen remains at the heart of that experience, offering scale, immersion and a sense of togetherness.
‘‘At PVR INOX, we see our cinemas as lifestyle destinations rather than simply places to watch films. From luxury recliners, fancy architecture and high definition laser projection to immersive 3D audio, easy digital booking and curated food and beverage options, PVR INOX’s offers convenience, comfort, quality and personalisation at every touchpoint Further, the brand’s ‘Dining Cinema’ concepts, which combine fine dining with the cinema experience, further reflect this approach,’’ says Gautam.

The brand provides premium formats and event-led programming to create distinctive and occasion-driven experiences.
‘‘Data analytics play an important role in our programming, scheduling and operational decisions,’’ says Gautam. ‘‘By studying local booking patterns, showtime preferences, audience behaviour and food-and-beverage trends, we can make our offerings more relevant to each location.’’
This helps to determine the right mix for a particular market, be it a major mainstream film, a regional cinema, an international show, an anime title or a live cricket screening. It also helps the brand to understand how different audience groups are engaging with cinema, especially the younger consumers who are exploring a wider range of languages and formats. Technology also makes regional content more accessible by supporting more informed decisions around screen allocation and show scheduling. This enables films to reach the audiences and locations where they are most likely to connect.
On the operational side, automation, digital supply-chain systems and data-led yield management help improve capacity utilisation and manage costs. These tools also support more personalised loyalty engagement, allowing the brand to communicate with guests in a relevant and timely manner.
India remains one of the most vibrant and under-screened entertainment markets in the world, with significant room for long-term growth. The big-screen experience continues to hold a special place in India because it combines entertainment with social connection. The segment is supported by a greater young population, rising disposable incomes, increasing urbanisation and a strong cultural affinity for cinema.
Talking about the cinema trends in India,Gautam says, ‘‘For many consumers, a cinema visit is a preferred out-of-home occasion or a way to discover new content together. Audiences today are consuming a wider range of films with strong stories travelling across languages and markets, making them more widely available to new audiences. There is also a growing interest in international festivals, films, anime, independent cinema and live event programming.''
Further sharing about the younger demographics, Gautam says,‘‘The cinema for younger audiences, including Gen Z, is increasingly a space for discovery and shared participation. They are exploring films across languages, genres and cultures, including regional cinema, when the content feels relevant and engaging. By bringing together hospitality, design, technology and storytelling, we aim to make their each visit comfortable, seamless, and memorable for our customers, especially the younger generation.’’
OTT platforms and cinemas act as complementary forces of the larger entertainment ecosystem. OTT offers convenience and personal choice, while cinema offers scale, emotion, and energy of a shared experience.
Gautam says, ‘‘Although OTT platforms provide convenience, the big-screen experience remains difficult to replicate at home. Large-format visuals, immersive sound, premium technology, the collective response of an audience and the overall outing experience, all contribute to its appeal. This is why cinema continues to be a preferred out-of-home entertainment space.’’ He adds, ‘‘At PVR INOX, we focus on strengthening this distinction through large screens, immersive sound, premium formats, elevated hospitality and carefully curated food and beverage offerings. We also programme experiences such as the Oscar Film Festival, global concert screenings, live sports and special event screenings, and make theatrical experience more inclusive with regional films, international titles and alternate content which forms a part of wider programming approach.’’
Audiences may watch content at home, but certain films and events are meant to be experienced collectively. When a film becomes a cultural moment, the cinema remains the place where audiences want to come together and experience it at its full scale.
Navigating content cycles effectively, maintaining cost efficiency in an evolving environment, and building consistent audience engagement throughout the year are not easygoing tasks and require efficient and effective operational management.
‘‘Our response has been built to offer more diversified and flexible entertainment offerings. Alongside mainstream film releases, we bring alternate content, creating a consistent flow of engagement and reducing dependence on single content categories,’’ says Gautam. He adds, ‘‘ We are also widening our theatrical experiences by presenting multi-language films and using data intelligently to optimize staffing, energy consumption, screen scheduling and pricing. Strong supply-chain discipline and regular operational reviews further help us maintain operational efficiency without compromising the guest experience.’’
The brand’s greater objective is to remain agile while ensuring that every PVR INOX location continues to deliver a consistent, high-quality experience to its customers.
Talking about the brand’s future plans, Gautam shares, ‘‘Over the next decade, we will continue to expand through FOCO models, particularly in Tier II, Tier III cities and emerging Indian markets. We will also keep raising the standards of our theatrical and luxury experience providing best-in-class projection, sound, premium formats, design and culinary experiences.’’
PVR INOX’s vision is to position itself as a leading out-of-home entertainment and lifestyle platform, bringing together cinema, culture, technology, hospitality and shared experiences to audiences across markets.
The brand will also focus on strengthening its role as a mediator for bringing international cinema to India, while also proliferating India’s regional films to wider audiences. The brand will continue to serve as a platform to bring curated festival selections, world-premiere titles, live sports, concert films and other forms of alternate content to the audience.
‘‘Our ambition is not to grow the number of screens, but to make each cinema more relevant to the market and valuable to its audience. We want PVR INOX to remain a place where people come together to discover content, share experiences and enjoy the best of out-of-home entertainment,’’ signs off Gautam.
