UBL, AB-InBev, and Carlsberg Collaborate to Establish Brewers’ Association of India
 

India's foremost beer manufacturers, including United Breweries (UBL), now under the ownership of Dutch brewing giant Heineken, AB-InBev, and Carlsberg, have jointly announced the establishment of a new industry association named Brewers’ Association of India (BAI).

These three brewing giants—UBL, Brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) which owns renowned brands like Budweiser, Hoegaarden, and Corona, and Carlsberg, known for its Carlsberg and Tuborg brands—collectively contribute to approximately 85 percent of beer sales in India.

UBL leads the Indian beer market with its popular brands such as Kingfisher, Kalyani Black, Heineken, and Amstel Bier. BAI, established in collaboration with the World Brewing Alliance (WBA), aims to foster the growth of the beer sector in India and promote innovation, moderation, and sustainability within the Indian beer market, according to an official statement.

The WBA serves as the global industry body for brewers and brewing trade associations across major markets, including Australia, Canada, the US, Europe, Japan, Korea, Latin America, Brazil, and New Zealand.

BAI's headquarters will be located in Delhi, with Vinod Giri appointed as its head, effective June 1, 2024. Giri, previously at the helm of the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC), brings extensive experience from the Indian alcoholic beverage industry to his new role.

Brewers can play an important role in strengthening local economies, contributing to thriving communities and achieving better public health outcomes. The time is right for brewers to raise their voices on these issues. The Brewers of India will be a vital part of promoting moderate drinking, promoting our industry,” WBA President and CEO Justin Kissinger said.

The newly formed association will welcome other brewers, both domestic and international, who share the commitment to fostering responsible growth within the Indian beer industry.

Kartikeya Sharma, President, AB InBev India stated, “There are many barriers to the growth of India’s beer category, including inequitable taxation, accessibility, and the ease of doing business. We will continue to advocate to unlock a new era for the beer category.”

The beer industry is an important sector for the states as it provides significant direct and indirect employment and generates significant revenues for the state to invest for its citizens. Through the Brewers’ Association of India, the industry expects to bring best global practices and further strengthen the sector,” commented Nilesh Patel, MD, Carlsberg India.

UBL MD & CEO Vivek Gupta said, “Together, the industry can help shape policies promoting responsible choices for consumers around moderate alcohol beverages, a robust taxation and regulatory framework and promoting investments for socio-economic benefits. We look forward to collaborating with governments and other stakeholders.”

The three companies have made substantial investments in India. Carlsberg operates seven breweries, UBL has 19, and AB-InBev India operates 10 breweries nationwide.

Sales of quick service restaurants (QSR) such as Domino's and Pizza Hut are feeling the pinch from the rapid expansion of food delivery platforms like Zomato and Swiggy, while quick commerce, led by Zomato-owned Blinkit and Swiggy-owned Instamart, is diverting younger customers from traditional retail and physical stores.

According to a report from brokerage firm BNP Paribas Exane, the QSR industry witnessed revenue growth of 9 percent year-on-year for the final quarter of FY24, compared to 18 percent growth in the same quarter of FY23. Both same-store sales growth (SSSG) and average daily sales (ADS) declined during this period.

Zomato and Swiggy have been aggressively expanding their reach. Zomato’s average monthly active restaurant partners surged from 61,000 in FY19 to 2.7 lakhs by FY24, while Swiggy boasted 2.72 lakh partners by the end of FY23. In contrast, there were only 5,300 branded stores operated by QSR firms.

The brokerage report highlighted, "With consumers now having more options, sales are likely to get fragmented, denting the already weak average daily sales of the QSR industry, along with the general weakness in demand."

Despite subdued growth, QSR firms have not significantly altered their store expansion plans or capital expenditure guidance. Jubilant Foodworks, the franchisee of Domino’s in India, plans to open 180 Domino’s, 50 Popeyes, and 25 Hong’s Kitchen stores. Devyani International, operating KFC and Costa Coffee, aims for 275-300 net new store additions in FY25. A survey conducted by brokerage firm Bernstein revealed that 60 percent of respondents aged 18-25 preferred purchasing from quick commerce platforms, with 12 percent opting for mom and pop stores, 10 percent using slotted delivery platforms, and only 5 percent choosing modern retailers.

Quick commerce adoption decreased with age, with 44 percent adoption in the 26-35 age group, 33 percent in the 36-45 range, and 30 percent in the over 45 age group. Older users relied more on mom and pop stores, with adoption rates at 27 percent for over 45-year-olds and 20 percent for the 36-45 age group.

Grocery remained the dominant category for quick commerce usage, with 44 percent of customers primarily using it for groceries. Home and cleaning supplies followed at 20 percent, while beauty and personal care accounted for 16 percent. Newer categories like apparel, electronics, and books had lower adoption rates at 2 percent, 4 percent, and 1 percent, respectively.

Swiggy’s top five most ordered burgers were the Crispy Veg Burger, McAloo Tikki Burger, McVeggie Burger, Crispy Chicken Burger, and Chicken Zinger Burger - classic. Innovative flavors also gained traction among Swiggy users, with unique options like the Signature Quinoa Burger, Beetroot Falafel Burger, Kurkure Chaap Burger, and Rajma Mexicana Burger becoming popular choices. This initiative facilitates virtual consultations with specialized doctors in General Medicine, Gynecology, Orthopedics, and Pediatrics, catering specifically to the needs of delivery partners, their spouses, and children. Additionally, delivery partners will have access to prescribed medications at discounted rates, ensuring affordable healthcare access when needed.

According to a regulatory filing, Parag Milk Foods recently announced a significant 56.1 percent decrease in consolidated net profit, amounting to Rs 9.81 crore for the fourth quarter ending March 2024. This is compared to a consolidated net profit of Rs 22.35 crore during the same period in the previous fiscal year.

The BSE filing revealed that its total revenue from operations declined to Rs 790.11 crore in Q4 FY24, down from Rs 800.95 crore in Q4 FY23. On the other hand, total expenses for the company decreased to Rs 784.23 crore in Q4 FY24, compared to Rs 793.57 crore in the corresponding period the previous year.

Devendra Shah, Chairman, Parag Milk Foods stated, “Our consolidated revenues for FY24 have crossed the milestone of Rs 3,000 crore; along with improvement in margins and profitability. The profit after tax for the year amounted to Rs 91 crore, supported by healthy operating cash flows of Rs 99 crore."

In the preceding fiscal year FY24, the company experienced a remarkable 73.3 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth in consolidated profit, reaching Rs 90.58 crore compared to the consolidated net profit of Rs 52.24 crore in the fiscal year 2022-23. Revenue from operations for the fiscal year FY24 amounted to Rs 3,138.7 crore, showing an increase from the revenue of Rs 2,892.6 crore in FY23.

"In the recent quarters, milk procurement prices have been favorable, but there is an anticipation of a potential increase. Despite facing challenges, we are prepared to enhance our margin profile. We are making progress in transforming our business processes while also enhancing efficiency throughout the value chain. As we expand and accelerate our distribution network, we intend to establish a foreign wholly owned subsidiary (WOS) in Dubai to serve the international market. With a strong foundation in place, we are confident that we will achieve industry-leading growth and profitability in the future,” Shah explained.

LT Foods, a global FMCG company with Indian origin and with presence of over 70 years in the consumer food sector, reported a 14% increase in consolidated net profit, reaching Rs 150.24 crore for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023-24, driven by strong sales.

LT Foods owns basmati rice brands 'Daawat' and 'Royal,' registered a net profit of Rs 131.81 crore in the same period last year. Total income for the January-March quarter of 2023-24 rose to Rs 2,091.73 crore, up from Rs 1,834.95 crore in the corresponding period the previous year, as stated in a regulatory filing. Expenses also increased, totaling Rs 1,898.46 crore compared to Rs 1,685.92 crore a year earlier. For the entire fiscal year 2023-24, LT Foods reported a 41.35% rise in net profit, amounting to Rs 597.59 crore, up from Rs 422.75 crore the previous year. Total income for the year climbed to Rs 7,822.05 crore, compared to Rs 6,978.81 crore the prior year.

Commenting on the company's performance, Ashwani Arora, MD and CEO of LT Foods, stated that despite a challenging external environment, the company has achieved remarkable growth in both revenue and profitability for another consecutive year.

He highlighted that the three main segments—Basmati and other specialty rice, organic food and ingredients, and Ready-to-Eat and Ready-to-Cook products—have together delivered an impressive 12% year-on-year growth.

This consistent performance underscores our strategic focus on continuous investment on brands across geographies and innovation, which has significantly bolstered our domestic and international market position,” Ashwani further stated.

Grocery delivery service Instacart has announced its collaboration with Uber Eats, aiming to offer restaurant delivery services to its customers. San Francisco-based Instacart stated that its U.S. shoppers will be able to see a “Restaurants” tab in the company’s app in the coming weeks. Uber Eats Drivers will be responsible for delivering the restaurant orders. 

The Instacart Plus members paying an amount of Rs 99 per year or Rs 9.99 per month for free grocery deliveries over $35 will be enjoying the free restaurant delivery service for order over $35. Meanwhile, regular Instacart members will have to pay the Uber Eats delivery fee. 

The company will earn an affiliate fee with every order, but it didn’t say anything about any other financial details of the partnership. The collaboration will provide Instacart customers additional benefits in the competitive grocery delivery market. Instacart presently controls over 25 percent of the grocery market in the U.S. behind Walmart at 51 percent, according to YipitData, a market research company.

Uber Eats says that the partnership with Instacart will attract more customers to its restaurant partners, particularly in the Suburban neighborhoods where the grocery delivery company attracts more users. Instacart had 7.7 million monthly active users, a document file from last summer expresses that. The companies didn’t disclose the number of customers of Uber Eats.

The company is expecting to add 300 products in line by the fall which will include frozen foods, dairy items, snacks, beverages, pasta, soups, coffee, and chocolates. The pricing range for the products will be from $2 to under $15, and most of the products will cost under $5. 

The Bettergoods brand line splits into 3 categories including plant-based options like desserts made with oat milk and non-dairy cheeses; products for other dietary lifestyles, such as gluten-free or made without artificial flavors, colorings, or added sugars, and “Culinary Experiences.” The last category of the brand includes products like creamy corn jalapeno chowder and pasta from Italy. 

As an industry, we’re seeing younger customers be more brand agnostic, prioritizing quality and value, and driving increased interest in private brands,” said Scott Morris, Walmart’s Senior Vice President of Private Brands, Food and Consumables. 

Bettergoods is entering Walmart's other store-label food brands such as Great Value and Equate, which are known for providing lower-priced alternatives to national brand products. Many of Bettergood products are designed uniquely to Walmart while introducing its customers to new trends and flavors.

Fast-food chain Wow! Momo has secured Rs 70 crore (around $9 million) in an expanded Series D funding round from Z3 Partners.

With this latest infusion, the company has amassed Rs 480 crore ($51 million) in its Series D funding, comprising Rs 270 crore in primary funding and Rs 210 crore in secondary funding.

According to a report from the media, Indian Angel Network and Lighthouse Funds took part in the secondary acquisition.

In January this year, Wow! Momo secured Rs 350 crore (roughly $42 million) in the initial installment of its Series D funding, spearheaded by Khazanah Nasional Berhad.

 According to startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, the company was valued at more than $300 million.

According to the company, the fresh funds will be allocated towards advancing and expanding the quick-service restaurant brand, enhancing distribution channels, and investing in research and development for its FMCG division.

Wow! Momo ventured into the FMCG sector in July 2021.

Founded by Sagar Daryani and Binod Homagai, the 16-year-old Wow! Momo Foods manages three quick-service restaurant (QSR) brands—Wow Momo, Wow China, and Wow Chicken.

The company asserts a presence of 630 outlets spanning across 38 cities and maintains a direct workforce of 6,000 individuals.

During the current fiscal year (FY25), the company plans to broaden its reach by adding another 200 outlets.

Wow! Momo targets achieving a revenue range of Rs 650-700 crore in the current fiscal year (FY24), compared to Rs 435 crore in FY23.

Although the company has not yet submitted its financial statements for FY23, its operational revenue surged twofold to Rs 220 crore in FY22 from Rs 106 crore in FY21.

India's stock market has witnessed a notable 28 percent surge over the past year, prompting numerous companies to contemplate listings. However, investors are now exercising greater caution. Paytm, a digital payments firm, experienced an 80 percent decrease in its shares following its 2021 listing, with analysts attributing it to its lofty valuation. Similarly, Swiggy's competitor Zomato saw a decline in shares post its 2021 listing but has observed a resurgence this year after reporting two consecutive profitable quarters.

Initially valued at $10.7 billion by investors in 2022, Swiggy primarily focused on meal deliveries but has since diversified into groceries and restaurant bookings.

Diageo India is a prominent player in the alcohol beverage industry through United Spirits Ltd., demonstrated its commitment to combating drink driving by donating 50 state-of-the-art Alcohol Breath Analysers to the Telangana Police.

The event took place in Hyderabad, attended by key figures including Director General of Police Ravi Gupta, Additional Director General of Police for Railways and Road Safety Mahesh M Bhagwat, as well as senior representatives from Diageo India.

Also present were Road Safety SP Gone Sandeep, LB Nagar Traffic DCP Srinivasulu, Cyberabad Traffic Additional DCPs Venugopal Reddy, Shivakumar, and other distinguished guests.

Diageo India actively promotes campaigns against drink driving, notably through its flagship initiative called "Wrong Side Of The Road." This program utilizes real-life situations to educate adults about the dangers of drink driving and raise awareness effectively.

During the meeting, Director General of Police Ravi Gupta conveyed appreciation to Diageo Company and the NGO CSR Box for their contribution of high-quality breath analysers to the Telangana State Police Department.

He acknowledged the department's pioneering efforts and emphasized the significance of this initiative in bolstering the capabilities of police personnel to tackle drunk driving effectively. Gupta expressed optimism that the deployment of these devices, as part of their social responsibility endeavors, would contribute to saving lives, thereby underscoring its value and importance.

“Promoting responsible consumption is one of the key pillars of Diageo India’s Society 2030: Spirit of Progress ESG plan.We stay committed to championing road safety in Indiaand promoting responsible consumption through focussed initiatives to curb underage drinking, drink driving, and binge drinking. Diageo's "Wrong Side of The Road" initiative, created in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), aims to educate participants about the consequences of drink driving.

Additionally, Diageo India has collaborated with more than 25 Regional Transport Offices and established tab labs to promote awareness through the "Wrong Side of the Road" program.

Last year, more than 230,000 adults engaged in this educational anti-drink driving campaign.
